Maybe it really is "never the micro".
I was given a Pro1 in a corroded flightcase once. Turned out it had been stored under water. There aren't many basements in Australia, but somehow...
The only salvageable parts were the wooden endcheeks and the micro, which someone wanted to use to get another Pro1 going. Everything else was corroded to buggery. So that's a case where the ONLY thing that it wasn't, was the micro! Maybe the pins were gold plated!
The sad story of a generation of dud electrolytics is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
