"Have you considered that making a laptop-sized board to do what a
thumbnail-sized chip could do might not be the most entertaining use of your
time?"

No, Gordon. It is quite the opposite. I don't NEED, or even particularly
WANT, the thing I'm designing, and I'm certainly NOT designing a product for
sale.

What I actually want is the experience of designing and building it from
old-school chips while discovering the principles underlying how it works.

People like you (I'm guessing) look at microcontrollers and think, "Ooooh,
just think of all the cool things I can do with this chip...." I'm not
interested in that at all. I couldn't care less about the million things
that such chips can do, and I'm not interested in doing any of those things.
I just want to lay out circuits (in Excel), etch boards, drill holes, and
get carpal tunnel syndrome from holding onto my soldering pen for too long
while enjoying the lovely smell of flux fumes. I take perverse pleasure in
doing things with analog circuits and logic chips that most people would
need a microcontroller to do.

I already have a job. This is my hobby, and it doesn't need to make sense.
