[sdiy] Starting Point?

I find a different path here.
Building circuits with other kids was a great indoor hobby as a kid from Indiana/Michigan.
Many of us built walkie-talkies in kit form and had loads of fun getting them to work.
Raiding my Grandfathers electrical shop for bits and pieces drew him into spending time with us kids and showing us proper soldering and construction methods.
This not a sole experience for many of us as we all had to get help to get parts and make projects work safely. Pass on your knowledge to other kids, get them involved in building circuits. Many kids would love to do small projects and get better at something than video games and texting on cell phones.
I am teaching my 2 grandsons how to build a crystal radio and operate it. Unfortunately Rush Limbaugh’s radio station is near us so we are taking our projects to higher levels. Ham Radio was a favorite of mine and I am repairing my old system so my grandsons can try it out when they come over.
I have another item to say, If you wish kids to sound good in a band or orchestra, give them good instruments.
The same goes with starting out in electronics, a good tool will always be a better place to start. Simple hand tools are not too expensive and will prevent mistakes in circuit building. EBAY has been a goldmine for me and I am still buying better gear for design work.
I don’t need to work anymore but I am still building Hi quality projects because now I have learned how to do more with less.
Sorry for the rave, but many times I wished I had more time to keep building gear..

If I could go back and do my first projects with a station that could actually solder instead of a plug straight in the wall radioshack iron I think I would've made a lot of progress a lot faster. I'm sure my soldering was bad at the start but a garbage soldering iron was a big roadblock and made me think I was never going to learn.
