[sdiy] Starting Point?

Yes, my Gnome kit was a complete and utter failure, and I didn't attempt
Synth-DIY again for about 33 years after that. I only got back into it in
2008, when my real work got frustrating and enraging, and I needed a
distraction. Twelve years later, I'm still into it pretty heavily (although
not as heavily as during my peak Intellijel years, when everything else in
life took a back seat to it).

Same. My two early setbacks were the Paia Gnome and a Radio Shack shortwave
radio. Both only partially worked. Luckily I stuck it out and was able to
make some of the other Radio Shack red-p-box kits "go". I think the little
organ thing, the neon bulb light chaser, crystal radio, and a few others.
Placing the neon bulb chaser right next to the little organ and listening to
the repetitive spacey effects that had on the sound, ... that's what pushed
me over the edge. :)
