A PAiA Fatman is how I started, in 1998 or so. Took me almost six years
to get all the bugs out, most of them existed because I didn't know how
to handle a soldering iron at the time. I definitely incinerated a
74HC373 for example.
It gives an excellent amount of great sounds - and also limits you so
much, you'll want to overhaul it completely with mods. I've still got
plans laying around to buy a second to mutilate into a two oscillator
303-ish type machine, but haven't had time to do it.
