That 1-2-3 is exactly how I got my start, over a decade ago, and I'm 
still here -- and so is my heavily-modded fatman

In particular, PAiA has been doing this for, what, 20 years at least? 
Their kits are longstanding, mature products, well thought-out, good 
directions...

...but, for a n00b, the real kicker is this: If you get stuck, they will 
correspond with you over email to help you debug what you've done wrong, 
even if you're clueless.
