Regardless of where you start, you will need a good reference source. Many of us here have Horowitz and Hill _The_Art_of_Electronics_. It can be purchased hardbound, or it can be downloaded free as a PDF. The book is loaded with all of the basics with good explanations. It can be found in universities used as a text book. There is also a student guide available. Tons of schematics including the sections of "bad circuits" which are fun to examine to determine why they are called "bad circuits". Your past college level experience should come back quickly I'd think with this book.

Above all else, have fun!
