One thing that you might not be aware of is that chip makers (the good ones) will tell you how long they're planning on making a chip, and will even announce a "lifetime buy" situation where you need to buy all you're going to need before they stop. Other common terms are "NRND" (Not Recommended for New Designs) and then some generic terms for In Current Production.
The established companies are well hooked into this relationship with the chip makers. I guess it's just the lowly repair industry that's stuck with "unobtainium."
