I had a paragraph that mentioned that, and another that went on about 
problems with Fournier's printed point/pica ruler of 1737, but I thought 
I'd already dragged things too far into typographic geekery.:-)

That said, it's hard to understate the impact of Donald Knuth's work in 
several fields.
