Ultimately, the amount of current running through your connector will
determine the type of connector. You should always aim to have a low as
resistance as possible when connecting an external regulated PSU to the
case. If you are getting a voltage drop of over 10mV in your connector
it's probably too much. Excess voltage drops, particularly on the 0V
line, will lead to crosstalk between modules or circuit blocks within
modules.
And getting the resistance down to give you smaller voltage drops will
usually mean big connectors. Just because a connector says it can handle
1A doesn't mean it should be used even for 500mA if the voltage drop is
too big for your application.
And what's an acceptable amount of voltage drop will be determined by
the types of modules you have, how much noise and crosstalk can be
tolerated, cost, and the amount of physical space you have.
