I think you'll find almost all mains power connectors around the world
have supply sockets and appliance plugs.  And in several countries the
power sockets have shutters to cover the live terminals when nothing
is plugged in (e.g., Type G).

For some reason the audio world switched sides, with plugs on outputs
and sockets on inputs.
