Hi Lena.
My personal start 2 years ago was an Arduino microcontroller to output a
square wave using the tone() function.
If you go that route, the book "Arduino for Musicians" by Brent Edstrom was
useful.
The first filter I built was this:

It works surprisingly well for something so simple, and is happy on either
the single 9V shown or +/-12V dual rail.
I use perfboard with single plated-through holes and make wire connections
between every component.
