I've had two Zeds, and they are indeed nice if you don't need the multi
tracking function. I've heard great things about the Soundcrafts as well. I
personally have no need for a mixer anymore, as I have mixers inside the
modular (Befaco Hexmix, I'm a Eurorack guy) and have balanced cables
running from there straight to my interface, and back for processing
recorded audio through modules.
