It really depends on what resources you have available, as always for any 
optimization.  The usual "XOR and shift" thing is just one particular way of 
implementing a linear recurrence, there are many others.  One instance where 
lookup tables (both in hardware and software) become advantageous is when you 
unroll the recurrence loop in order to extract multiple bits per clock or 
iteration.
