Actually, Java and C are very similar, so if you have learned one of them and use the other later, learning the first was not a waste of time.

But I agree, there are way too many programming languages out there. Some with different names (like C and Java) are similar, while others with similar names (like Java and Javascript, or, worse, C and Objective C) are very different.
