You could use one of the standard characters (or a custom character) placed on the row above or below to indicate the currently playing step. 

Although in my experience rapidly moving sprites on industrial alphanumeric displays don't look too great because of the slow response time of the LCD.  It depends on the viewing angle and contrast voltage, so you might be able to find a combination that looks good.
