This one is interesting because it uses two resistors to split the feedback current. This gives it gain when compared with the input current (e.g. output current is a multiple of the input current.
This is significant because it allows the use of much larger input resistors and therefore a higher input impedance. The Scott Bernardi VCA2 (http://www.bernacomp.com/elec/lockbox/lockbox_vca2.gif <http://www.bernacomp.com/elec/lockbox/lockbox_vca2.gif>) example only uses a 33K input resistor, which is mostly ok on its own, but if you use the typical 100K attenuator pot at the input, the linear pot response gets horribly bent out of shape and you lose some of your input current. You can increase the input resistor to (say) 330K to get around this, but then you don’t get the required current output. The Hal Chamberlin version fixes this problem by allowing you to use the bigger input resistor and still be able to have the output at a level you need.

It essentially just provides a current path to stop the op-amp going open-loop when the input goes negative.
