No, you are not oversimplifying, and in the Laplace (or Fourier) domain it's
simpler still, since all that crummy calculus is converted to algebra.

Easy: since the impulse is the derivative of the step, the impulse response
is the derivative of the step response. Or am I over-simplifying here?
