Yes, it depends a lot on where the electricity is coming from, as well as
whether it's substituting for other heating, or placing a load on a
cooling system instead.  The repair/replace question also implicates
questions like how likely it is that the device really *will* be repaired
even if it *can* be, how the lifetimes compare with and without repair,
etc.

I wrote a series of Web log articles about the environmental issues
associated with synthesizers some months back, and power supply regulators

But even in a 5-part series there are a lot of issues I didn't get to, and
