Perhaps they presented the concept and were told no by the VCs, but decided to go forward anyway and this is their funding option. Perhaps it's a pet project that won't adversely affect their VC committed projects.   Usually the VCs can control board of directors decisions regarding company direction but i know nothing about this company.
