JUST the control, but yes, shrinking down for Euro. There are other
granular modules out there that if I had the control, I could manage
everything else with "off the shelf" modules.

Hm. I hadn't seen that.
Shaft bearings are a lot cheaper than the linear rail bearings, I'm
investigating how practical that might be. Don't want a lot of roll which
seems to be the main risk of round shafts, but it may be that a slot would
be good enough tolerance to hold it upright. Then it's down to how long a
shaft can I work with. Seems the shorter end of things are 100mm (which
would be under, maybe significantly under, 100mm throw) or 200mm. I'm not
seeing, e.g. 120mm which would give me close to 100mm throw while still
allowing for mounting.
As far as the reading of the travelling encoder, the spring idea is
probably over complicated too. tie-wrap strain relief at each end should
be sufficient to prevent a 3 or 4 wire twist/braid from breaking off at the
solder joints.
