Do you remember thick Ethernet?  They had markings on the cables so you
could tap into them at points where you'd avoid exactly this sort of
crap.

Use cable with the wrong velocity factor or put a tap in the wrong
place, and it was screwed.  Cut and join a cable, and it was screwed.
