Tom,
Maybe you've seen it, but Olivier Gillet wrote up a short document on
pole-mixing

which gives the various responses along with the pole-mixing
coefficients and the s-domain transfer functions.
The notch he obtains is a 3-pole as it happens, s^3+s^2+s+1 / (s+1)^3.
Just as in the case Don explained, you can see here how the s^3
cancels the s, and the s^2 cancels the 1, at the centre frequency.
