Before trying all of your favorite PCB fabs, just talk to them.
I have the luxury of multiple fabs within driving distance, so I actually toured each one and learned about their capabilities. I realize that not everyone has this option, but you can still call them and talk to someone in sales or support. The reason I suggest this is that I’ve learned how many fabs will randomly outsource orders based on how busy they are at the moment. Not only that, but some of the “far away” fabs that I can only access online will subcontract will my local fab for their overflow.
These decisions are made based on the files you provide, and nothing more, unless you actually talk to someone and ask about the options.
I’ve had the FR4 material color change completely from one order to the next, based purely on what they happen to have in stock at that location. Since I was using clear solder mask, these variations in FR4 material color made a huge difference in the product appearance. However, the solution is simple: I can simply specify a particular FR4 product when I order, rather than let them select from available stock.
In other words, if you find a favorite fab for making Euro rack panels from PCB designs, then be sure you know how to place an order that will guarantee consistent results. If you don’t tell them that the silk screen quality is important, or any of the other things that matter to you, then you might get great results on one order and horrible results on the next order.
I know, I know: everything is computerized and automated, and you’re not used to talking with humans. But for aesthetic results, you probably need to make a call, even if just to learn the proper way to place an automated order that will turn out the way you want.
