[sdiy] History of SDIY?

I think if your intention is to create an electronic instrument (or part of
one), for self improvement or to share with a greater community, that seems
like that should be good enough. Once the primary focus of your project no
longer meets either of those goals is where it begins to fall off. DIY can
absolutely turn into a professional product. Professionals can also tinker
and experiment with something without the intention of creating a product.
There's a lot of great examples from both sides already in this thread.

If I was writing a book about SDIY I'd show the philosophy + drivers behind
a few example hobbyists (John wants to make sound with an Arduino for a
class project, Jane wants to make a cracklebox for her noise band, etc),
and then get into the basics of choosing platforms, tools, whats required
for different types of devices, example projects, etc
