DIY for me is about making something for yourself from parts. The end
item may be available off the shelf, although probably not, but the key
thing is that you were a significant part of the assembly process.

You do not have to have designed it to be a DIYer. However, how much of
a part in the making of the thing probably should count. After all, is
assembling an Ikea flat pack, DIY? Probably not. Is assembling a Befaco
Rampage from a complete kit bought from Thonk, DIY? Probably yes because
it takes quite a bit more effort and skill than that Ikea table.

As for softsynths - surely they are SDIY if you have spent time
designing and 'assembling' it. And given the right environment it will
be able to make music and sounds. Which surely is of the defining traits
of a synth.

Reaktor may be a bit closer to Ikea if you don't go down too deep though.
