Yes. That is what makes DIY different from inventing or research and 
development. In my definition(*) DIY is achieving the invention or the 
idea of someone else by your own means. DIY never invents something. A 
DIYer may adopt someone others invention for his needs. So building a 
module that does not exist as a buyable product, but using existing 
ideas (lets say a two-VCF Module with crossmodulation) is DIY, because 
the VCF already has been invented.

On the other hand: many topics discussed here in this list are beyond 
this definition of DIY. And of course they are, as many of you already 
crossed the border of synth-DIY and became hardware developers.

(*) one has to know, that in German "DIY" is a loanword from English, 
which is used here since the 70s (there was a magazin "Selbermachen" 
which established it), and it is definitely used in German in the sense 
I describe.
