[sdiy] History of SDIY?

At the risk of sounding smart-ass-ish, define DIY.  If you are the first 
to do something, it that automatically DIY?  Is Robert Moog guilty of 
DIY?  What about Thaddeus Cahill and his Telharmonium, is that DIY?
