It was part of a long-running argument as to what, exactly, constitutes a "folk" instrument. Lots of people then--and still, today--feel that if electricity is involved, it's not a folk instrument. My argument has always been that circuitry and soldering are more accessible to average people in an urban environment than aging/cutting/bending/gluing/carving wood. A synthesizer made from a sound chip is more accessible to more people than a banjo, let alone a grand piano.

Street posters were a big deal in Seattle around that time. There were gorgeous posters everywhere--silk-screened, woodcut, lithographed, and (most of all) made with copiers. Art Chantry's "Instant Litter" covers some of the scene.
