I don't think it's a double standard to not have to please a lowest common
denominator that is decades old.

Nobody said they expect anyone to be on "the latest". gmail.com has been
around for over a decade. It is possible to say "a modern mail reader"
without implying something cutting edge.

Nobody wants anyone else to make it harder for them to read the list, and I
think that goes for both "camps". If insistence on a particular standard
of "plain text purity" were to require me to jump through hoops to fulfill,
I'd be gone, no matter how much I appreciate the SNR on this list.
Similarly if someone were insisting that everyone must read email with an
HTML capable reader I'd agree that was also unreasonable. But I don't see
any (many? I confess to having skimmed a lot of this thread) of the list
members demanding that. Implying otherwise ("You sending me an HTML
message forces me to have an HTML-capable mailer.") is just as specious
as painting HTML users as victims.

All of this seems moot anyway -- many of us have been using gmail as our
reader and composer for quite a long time and this isn't a continuous or
chronic problem. The occasional HTML only email could be dealt with by a
simple reminder to the sender to adjust their mailer settings to either do
multipart or text formatting, and everyone ought to be happy, right?
