My understanding of the practice was that the hardware is the same across several models and the firmware simply hobbles it for the cheaper models. After all, it makes more sense to build 10,000 units than 2000 of five different things, so it’s cheaper for the manufacturer, and it also saves on the units you need to keep in stock. If an order comes in, you put the appropriate firmware on, bang the correct sticker on the front panel and you’re off.

Anyway, glad to hear it wasn’t the Rigol that was so bad - a friend just told me he’d bought one!
