My point is though, you can't just say "that's not synth DIY because I
don't like it", although having written softsynths and built hardware
synths, and built hardware that runs software implementations of
synthesis I kind of get where "softsynths aren't real synth-diy
material" is coming from.  It's still DIY but there are plenty places to
discuss the finer points of synth plugin authoring.

Holy shit, that is terrifying.

Years ago, probably in the early 2000s or so, there was a guy who sold a
PIC microcontroller for about £40 that could be transplanted into any
Rover/Peugeot/Renault or similar IR car central locking fob, that when
you pressed the button it would send the "Go to sleep right now" command
to every Furby in the room.  An absolute Godsend to legions of
nerve-shattered parents :-D
