As part of my B.Eng in Electronic Engineering many many years ago we had 
a management studies course. I don't remember much about it but one 
thing the tutor said was particularly memorable.

"An assumption is the prerogative of those who are too lazy to ascertain 
the full facts."

I still like to trot that one out when I want to sound pompous...
