[sdiy] Eagle for PCB Layout

Long time EAGLE user here. I haven't yet gone to the Autodesk version, but
will do so before my next nontrivial board project. I've done everything up
to and including spaceflight mil spec 12 layer boards with 3 on 3 geometry,
LVDS, impedance control, etc. with EAGLE. Altium has more features, but
it's too spendy to buy as an individual. I *could*, but that's a hell of a
lot of money that I'm not sure really pans out. If I was doing contract
design or layout for an Altium shop I'd possibly make the leap if the
numbers worked out.

Re building your own libraries, I do tend to make my own custom EAGLE
libraries, importing components from standard libraries as well as defining
my own, and adding extra attributes so I can go directly from a board
design to a fully marked up BOM with part numbers and suppliers. I find
that capability a huge timesaver, particularly if anything ends up needing
revs.
