I thought this flamewar thread was already over... 2164 is just current mirrors, no input or output in opamp or logic gate sense. With "input" and "output" grounded, all 8 main transistors in the gain cell are fully ballanced, carrying exactly the same current, the most comfortable state for them to rest. With any "input" floating it may start to oscillate in exceptional circumstances. And noone wants to have something oscillating inside a chip that is doing possibly important job with other cells. It's like leaving copper fill on PCB not connected to anything (somehow I feel that may start another flamewar on PCB design). With CV input left open it has a gain of 1, unlike for example 3360 and most other VCAs/OTAs which are fully closed then. Roman PS. in response to a wonderful parallel example of 190kmph on autobahn, I saw once a video of a guy driving much over 100kmph in full-traffic city, he was literally overtaking all motobikes on his way in a BMW car. Noone got hurt so it was probably safe. Let's put the 's', or spirit, back into the diy. Repent, admit your bad 'syn(th)s' designs and be saved. How about a revival meeting of the elders and true hobbyists? Now don't forget to send in those tithes brother Dixon. (make the cheque payable to: The Brotherhood of Silly Elders or The Keepers of the Hareem.) Praise the Loon.
