Gmail (Google) breaks from the Internet standards regarding email threads. My experience is that Google employees are vehement that their way of doing things is right. Apparently, they think AI is better than the established headers that mark threads using In-Reply-To: and References:
Gmail might do better when things are broken, but it’s horrible when things are done according to the standards.
Besides, the Gmail client seems to encourage people who don’t understand email to quote everything in a long thread. They do this by hiding all of the quoted text so that people don’t realize that they’re needlessly publishing small novels with each reply.
