Wear a fitbit or iWatch devices that makes that info available and can
be piped into Max/MSP or another processing app. I don't know which
device overs access to the data in realtime...maybe you need a
developer API account.
I believe the iWatch uses an infrared sensor or green LED if it
doesn't detect well. Hopefully your friend doesn't have sleeve tattoos
since that can affect the reading.
Post the final result, I'd love to see the performance or final idea.
