That’s *exactly* the problem, Brian. Finding a set of components that provide all the options you need (jacks, pots, switches, etc - at least LEDs are easy!) is not at all simple. In theory, it’s possible. In practice, it’s time-consuming and difficult if it’s possible at all. Hence the move in Euroland towards an almost standardised set of parts as one manufacturer learns from another and saves themselves some time by using similar parts. The two-PCBs-parallel-to-panel Skiff-friendly design of Eurorack modules has definitely been the direction of travel in recent years and alongside that people have learned which parts they can use in those designs.
