Oh, how could I forget ARTA!
It is nice. It can generate frequency sweeps or noise and show the 
frequency resonse and stuff like THD+N of anything you put between the 
out- and in-puts of your computer's audio device. I think it supports 
e.g. ASIO and using audio devices exclusively, so other applications 
will not spoil your output signal.
You can load a e.g. measurement microphone correction curve as CSV 
{freq; magnitude}, and can export suchm even in the demo version which 
runs forever and is somewhat restricted.
They have some tips on their site on how to build a basic protection for 
your soundcard intput.
I think their stuff was originally made as an aide to speaker cabinet 
building.
