Drive the input less hard to reduce the distortion. This will be at the
cost of degraded SNR though.

Subject: [sdiy] LM13700 troubles yet again
Hi,
I am breadboarding the 4-Q Multiplier from EN and the 13700 datasheet,
using the 13700 in place of the 3080. What I am seeing is incomplete
cancellation due to distortion in the 13700, causing a minimum signal
out of about 100-200mV. I patched up the same circuit using a
13700-based VCA and an attenuverting mixer and got the same result:
incomplete cancellation due to distortion.
I'm disillusioned with the 13700. It has given me nothing but problems.
