According to Mary Curtis (designer Doug Curtis's wife), OnChip worked with
the estate and got their cooperation in re-releasing the 3340:

As I understand it, this was a courtesy rather than a legal obligation, but
I would support them over others (rhymes with Behringer) who also produced
a 3340 clone.

(note: this is NOT an request for amature legal/moral opinions and
harangues about patent/copyright law, IP, cloning, etc..  please, just
don't.)
