It's hard enough getting 3.5mm plugs and jacks to match!
Maybe start with that?
About every plug and jack seems different, so, some cables work with 
some modules but not with others and not so well with others.
There is a huge difference between 3.5mm jacks and plugs from various 
manufacturers.
They are not all the same, as Malekko found out when TipTop plugs were 
longer than most and blew up the original Envelators.
Even different Doepfer brand cables are very different.
This seems like it would be the most important to users.
