It is trivial to visually verify whether the keying on a cable is correct.
It is not much harder to verify the boxed header most of the time.
Sometimes it is difficult to trace if the module mfr doesn't even bother
with electro caps on the input *and* doesn't indicate the negative side in
any unambiguous way.

Every cable that is wrong gets cut and thrown in the trash.

And OP described a way to deal with wrong-way boxed headers.
