not only capsule and amp can make a difference.
That one guy, Michael Joly, made modding cheap microphones to improve
performance his job. He started with the "sound coffin" oktava MK219,
hence the name "oktavamod", although I think the name has changed by now.
Back then (2003 ?) he had some freely available info on modding some of
the Oktava mics also in numerous forum posts, I forgot the site where
that was on.
I thus modded the MK219 once, mechanically, and it did improve clarity
(e.g. protective mesh mods, removal of plastic resonator discs for
(doing away with) high-end hyping etc).
He had/has some nice comparison recordings on his site, e.g. modded
Oktava or MXL vs. vintage Neumann, which might surprize some :-)
