I'm pretty sure if someone were to accidentally use a TS plug instead of TRS
you would still get a short.  The ring connection would contact the sleeve
on the plug

Hi Jacob, as others have said there are isolating washers made for this
purpose. Just tossing this out there in case it's been overlooked, but can
you use a stereo version of the same jack and connect this net to the ring,
leaving the sleeve free to be grounded?
