Hopefully any new standard will at least remain inter-operable with the existing MIDI standard so that
"New MIDI to MIDI interfaces" can be developed to allow current and future MIDI devices to be
integrated.

Despite it's faults, MIDI has been hugely successful and it is cheap and relatively simple to implement. I
like that I can hook up my early 80s JX3P to the latest MIDI gear and it will just work (all notes off aside).
I can't say the same for most computer equipment of that vintage.
