I think that's the most difficult part, no authoritative body to direct the process
and the usual rivalry between manufactures all wanting to be the one who decides the
new protocol and physical connection (and then collect license fees). The idea of
faster MIDI has been around for a very long time. Users want it. But nobody wants
to release a synth that connects to nothing else. If a new standard were introduced,
at least the first synths (if not all) would have to implement a sort of bridge
between the new tech and the old MIDI standard so that old MIDI devices can still be
included in a set up.
