Years back, doing my home brew beer I used the old fridge from the engineering common room at the local university I worked at at the time. The compressor worked but the thermostat didn't. Used a data logger (dt50) with a thermocouple to switch the compressor.
BrewBeer fridge controllers can be cheap too, though I haven't brewed any beer in years.
