I'd go along with the idea of building a VCF rather than a VCO. VCOs are pretty boring and don't really contribute much to the overall picture - they're just a wee box that goes "beep" at somewhere within 10% of the correct frequency. VCFs actually shape the sound, and if you build one you can get started right away filtering and vandalising other audio sources.
