"Avoid duplicate copies of messages" is annoying in that
whenever someone replies to you on-list but includes an off-list
copy, which is often in my experience, you don't get the on-list
copy.

So a) your list folder is not a complete archive of the list (it
has holes in it) and b) threads are spread across two folders
(the list folder and the catch-all folder for the email address
you used to subscribe to the list).
